Get a Better Night’s Sleep: Eco-Luxury, Handcrafted Mattress Company Expands to Naples

Michigan-based Harbor Springs Mattress Company’s first location outside Michigan “exhibits” mattresses as art

NAPLES (Feb. 20) – Michigan-based Harbor Springs Mattress Company, one of the country’s few handcrafted and all-natural mattress creators, has expanded to Naples, announced company president Dar Charlebois. The Naples location is the company’s first showroom outside Michigan, where it has showrooms in Harbor Springs, Rochester and Traverse City.

The move to Naples was prompted by the increase of customers who bought mattresses for their second homes in Florida. “South Florida, especially the Gulf Coast, is by far the favorite second home location for our Michigan customers,” Charlebois said.

In 2022, the company had an unprecedented number of mattresses bound for Florida. The team personally delivered mattresses throughout the state, with the majority going to Gulf Coast cities. The time was ripe to expand to the Sunshine State.

Harbor Springs Mattress Company creates handcrafted mattresses with the centuries-old technique of hand-tufting. The two-sided mattresses are created with 100% natural fibers and are meant to last a lifetime.

The Naples showroom is located at 82 9th Street at the corner of 1st Avenue South. Designed as an art gallery for handcrafted mattresses, it exhibits the company’s five curated mattress selections, including the best-selling Bed of Roses and Trillium mattresses, both made with hand-tufted layers of pure cotton, natural latex and wool from sheep farms in Michigan.

According to Charlebois, the mattresses are the “star attraction” of the Naples showroom. “Customers often comment on the beauty of our mattress ticking, notably the vintage-inspired quilted texture of our signature Bed of Roses and the organic cotton on our Trillium mattress with its hand-euro-stitched micro-mattress topper.”

Customers can see and touch all the materials that go into the beds, from the fresh-spun woolen batting washed in natural soap to the unbleached cotton that retains tiny specks of the cotton’s boll.

The company’s passion for natural is reflected in the showroom’s furnishings and relaxing vibe. The showroom’s interior design was assisted by Harbor Springs’ Chatham House and features hand-crafted murals and oversized photos of artisans at work in the Harbor Springs workshop, elegant lighting and comfortable seating. A coffee and spirits bar will inspire customers to linger, learn and experience the different mattresses.

A Harbor Springs Mattress bed is made to order and quickly shipped. “We start making your mattress after you place your order. It will not come from a warehouse. It will be made fresh just for you and you alone,” said Charlebois.

All mattresses are created in the company’s Harbor Springs showroom in a windowed workshop that allows customers direct views of the bed-making process.

The wool is spun fresh from a 100-year-old family-run sheep farm in Michigan. Natural latex is made from the milky white sap of the rubber tree, hevea brasiliensis, which is processed to achieve a supportive, stable form. Layers of American-made, unbleached cotton add supple support. The “soul” of the mattress is its innerspring, which provides a level of resiliency and support that cannot be found in beds made only with foam or foam latex.

Harbor Springs’ artisan method of bed making is an Old-World tradition of creating luxurious comfort and longevity. Box springs, which are becoming less common, are another signature of a Harbor Springs Mattress bed, which builds the strongest box springs in the industry with 9-gauge steel springs.

“Our box springs are like good shocks on a luxury car. We spare no expense toward making a mattress last 25 years,” said Charlebois.

Harbor Springs Mattress Co, will be having their Grand Opening Celebration In Naples on March 06th and our Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting on March 07th at 4pm.

About Harbor Springs Mattress Company

Harbor Springs Mattress Company was founded in 2004 by Detroit-native Rory Karpathian after decades of senior positions at major U.S. mattress manufacturers, a career that involved extensive travel throughout the country for hands-on supervision of factory operations. “I loved it,” he said. “I loved being on the floor with workers, trouble-shooting production and machines and making improvements.”

“Then everything changed,” Karpathian said, sharing that the mattress industry began to “churn out chemical-laden, poorly made foam-based mattresses. Springs were removed from box springs and mattresses became one-sided.”

With a leap of faith and conviction, Karpathian launched Beds by Design in Harbor Springs, Mich., the original name of Harbor Springs Mattress Company. His intention was to bring back the lost art of hand-tufting to guarantee comfort and longevity, and to use natural fibers to ensure health, strength and sustainability.

In 2015, a milestone event transformed the company and expanded its trajectory: Karpathian’s partnership with Dar Charlebois. According to Charlebois, “I fell in love with both the man and his company.”

As business blossomed, Charlebois and the team noticed an increase in customers who bought mattresses for their second homes in Florida. “South Florida, especially the Gulf Coast, is by far the favorite second home location for our Michigan customers,” Charlebois said.
