It's that Time Again to Head North: How Snowbirds Can Protect Their Homes and Valuables When Leaving Florida

For many snowbirds, leaving Florida marks the end of warm breezes, sunny mornings, and coastal relaxation. Whether you’re heading back north for the season or splitting time between residences, one thing is certain: peace of mind matters just as much as the journey itself.

Unlike typical homeowners, snowbirds face a unique challenge—being away from their property for extended periods. An empty home can become vulnerable if not properly prepared.

The good news? With thoughtful precautions, you can safeguard your home, belongings, and travel experience with limited stress.

Why Snowbirds Face Higher Security Risks

When a home sits unoccupied for weeks or months, it can attract unwanted attention from amateur troublemakers and professional criminals. Opportunistic thieves, unnoticed maintenance issues, and even utility failures can quickly turn into costly problems.

Additionally, long-distance travel introduces its own safety considerations.

Awareness and preparation go a long way.

Lock It Down: Securing Your Home

Start with the basics—then go a step further.

  • Check all entry points: Doors, windows, garage access, and sliding glass doors should be securely locked. Old fashioned tumbler door locks and padlocks are worthless. Simple lock picking and bump keys make breaking in to a vacant home a no-brainer for those with even limited skills.

  • Install a real security system: AI-powered, integrated security systems are a must have for the affluent community homes. AI sensors, alarms and cameras allow you to monitor your home remotely.  More importantly, the AI technology can filter out the false alarms that upset you, and can cost you fee for every false alarm that the police respond to.

  • Use lights: AI security can integrate to make your home look occupied and gives the impression that someone is still there.  Professional thieves have the technology to actually figure out that you are there or not, but it is a good start to keep bad guys out.

  • Pause deliveries: Mail and packages piling up are a clear signal that no one is home.  Forwarding and a good neighbor can assist with this.

  • Let a trusted neighbor know: Having someone keep an eye on your property is invaluable.  Even an outside security agency and local police with a regular drive-by and help. But honestly, it's not enough in this day and age.

  • On the water?:  This is a unique situation. Many times, the best a local friend or even a professional can do is see the view from the street.  The water or beach gives unfettered access to the property from a blind side.  The only reasonable solution is a professional AI-based security installation that can make some important decisions on preventing, detecting and responding to a thief or vandalism.  But ignoring false alarms is unique and important.

Protecting Valuables

Before you leave, take inventory and photos of your most important belongings, art work, firearms, jewelry...everything.

  • Store valuables like jewelry, documents, and electronics in a safe or safety deposit box.  A safe that is affixed to the structure. We have heard of thieves rolling a large safe down the street to their truck in a gated neighborhood in Fort Myers...true story.

  • Avoid leaving high-value items visible through windows.

  • Back up important digital files and keep copies of essential documents in a secure location.

  • Keep the power on and have a UPS for the security and communications systems. You do not want to be blind in an emergency situation.

Don’t Forget About Utilities

One of the most overlooked risks is utility-related damage.

  • Turn off the water supply to prevent leaks or flooding.

  • Unplug unnecessary electronics to reduce fire risk.

  • Set your thermostat appropriately to prevent mold and humidity damage.

  • Must-have smart sensors that alert you to issues like water leaks or power outages are apart of your AI security system.

Stay Safe on the Road

Your journey is just as important as your destination.

  • Plan your route ahead of time and share your itinerary with a family member or friend.

  • Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle.

  • Avoid posting real-time travel updates on social media that signal your home is empty.

  • Make sure your vehicle is serviced and road-ready before departure.

Peace of Mind Is the Goal

Being a snowbird is about enjoying the best of both worlds—not worrying about what you left behind. Taking simple, proactive steps can dramatically reduce your risks and help ensure that your return to Florida is just as pleasant as your departure.

With the right preparation, you can lock the door, set the security system, hit the road, and fully enjoy your seasonal lifestyle—knowing everything back home is safe and sound.
