Collier Children’s Advocacy Center leads community discussion on trauma-informed response to child abuse
The Collier Children’s Advocacy Center (Collier CAC) brought together community members for a focused discussion on the importance of trauma-informed response during its “From Surviving to Saving Lives” event on March 17 at Gulfshore Playhouse. Held in partnership with the Naples Children’s Foundation, the program reinforced how coordinated, trauma-informed care supports a child’s path to recovery.
Tonier Cain, a childhood abuse survivor and nationally recognized advocate, shared her personal journey and the role trauma-informed care played in her healing. Now a multi-business owner and founder of the nonprofit organization Neen Cares Inc., Cain emphasized the importance of equipping law enforcement and partner agencies with the tools and perspective necessary to better support children and families navigating trauma.
Lt. Wade Williams of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office provided insight into a local case involving suspected child abuse, illustrating how trauma-informed practices can strengthen investigations while prioritizing the well-being of the child.
“Our goal to provide trauma-informed care to children across Collier County depends on a community that is informed and engaged,” said Jackie Stephens, CEO of Collier CAC. “These conversations give the community insight into how they can help children in their neighborhoods receive the support they need during difficult times.”
Following the program, attendees connected with Collier CAC team members to gain a deeper understanding of the organization’s integrated approach and the services available to children and families in Collier County.
The event also included recognition of Collier CAC’s “Seeds of Strength” recipients, honoring individuals whose support has advanced the organization’s mission. Honorees included board member Brad Boaz, Julie Van Tongeren of the Collier Community Foundation, Lise Eichenlaub, daughter of longtime supporter Daphne Pfaff and Sarah Zaiser-Kelly of the Naples Children Foundation.
About the Children’s Advocacy Center of Collier County
The Collier Children’s Advocacy Center is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the first point of care for children in Collier County when abuse is suspected. Since 1986, Collier CAC has provided forensic interviews, medical evaluations, therapy, family advocacy and parent education in one child-centered setting, reducing what could be up to six separate agency visits to a single coordinated response.
Collier CAC is the only organization in Collier County legally authorized to perform forensic medical exams for children under 12 and to deliver medical, court advocacy and therapeutic services under one roof. All services are provided free of charge, removing financial barriers so families can access support regardless of circumstance.
While the organization partners closely with the Department of Children and Families, law enforcement, the State Attorney’s Office and Collier County Public Schools, it is not a government agency. Collier CAC relies on community support to sustain and expand its work, as abuse occurs in every zip code.
